Default Trade of the year, from the idiot of the Year.

So I"m standing in Lion's Arch the other night trying to sell off some small runes, watching the trade line for anything I may be interested in buying. I soon see a guy selling a Superior Fire Rune. Since these are fairly uncommon and most E's use fire magic I decided to ask the price b/c a guild member uses Fire magic. I only had 27k, but figured what the heck. He says wait a moment, and after waiting I see this in the chat box "150". At first I'm thinking 150k and he's being a @$$ thinking he can wayyyy oversell it, but I decide to play naive and meet up with him. I put up 150g in the trade and hit accept. Next thing I know he puts in the Fire rune and suddenly its in my inventory... At this point I'm waiting for him to freak out at any moment that it wasn't the right deal, but he just said 'ty' and walked off. I about dropped a load to say the least. Turns out my guild member didn't need it, so I sold it off for 47k, that's a 46,850 profit folks. And now my lil guild (Order of the Ravens) is the proud owner of a its own Guild Hall thanks to worst trader ever.

I bought a Superior Absortion rune for, I think, 450 gold.

I felt pretty bad when I later found out how much they actually go for.

the trend lately seems to be less desirable Minor go for 150-300, Major 1-3k, Superior 5-7k. More effective runes more like Minor 500-800, Major 10k+, Superior 20-30k+, and of course the all Godly Vigor rune topping out over 100k.

I don't see how the guy was an idiot if he practically gave it to you for 150 gold. Maybe he was being nice... And if he truly didnt know the worth, then that just makes him new and unaware. I just feel bad for the guy and now you're calling him an idiot.

er.. I don't. Obviously the guy had to put some time into the game to be at Lion's Arch. It looked like to me all he did was go check out the merchant buy price and then told me that's what he'd sell it for. I seriously doubt he was just being nice. Sorry, but I will fault someone for their own ignorance. He has to buy armor and runes just like the rest of us, and if he's too lazy to pay attention to the player economy and only do what the NPC's say, then yeah, he's an idiot.

If I'm not sure what something is worth I'll find others who are selling the same or a similar item and get their asking prices, and also then put it up for a bid war to ensure I get the best available price at that moment.

...It's not really a scam, I suppose..but it wasn't exactly a very nice thing for you to do, especially when you begin ridiculing and insulting him on a public Guild Wars board.

To many players, regardless of the market at the time; cheating/forcing a player out of 20+k for a Rune, Weapon or otherwise....isn't part of their game......but that doesn't make them an idiot.
I honestly could care less what everyone else is selling them for, if I go to a merchant and I can only get 1k then you won't see me jacking the price up on it 5000% or something stupid like that. I play the game for me and it aint hard from pre thru post searing to acquire a fair amount of money....so don't anyone say it's about the money.

Sheesh, how about some gratitude?

I sell everything I get to the NPCs. Players don't deserve them.

pat yourself on the back for being a real sharp trader but dont expect much approval from most here for getting away with it

if i pulled a stunt like that i sure would not be bragging about it or saying look at how much i took this chump for

you now have a guild hall you were not able to afford honestly

I don't sell things to other players.. period. If it is an item I know will sell for a reasonable amount I'll let my g/f sell it. If she doesn't feel like it, I either give it away to a guildmate or sell to the merchant.

I also only very rarely buy from other players.

It boils down to the fact that I didn't get the game to start or attend a flea market. If I want that I can get in my car on the weekend ond go to a real one where I usually don't buy much either.

People in general are way too merchantile for my tastes.. But to each their own. I just don't have the time or patience for the rampant greed of some people and the outrageous behavior of others.

I for one will be happy if/when ANet institutes an auction house or something similar.
In the mean time I'll either get the goods myself or get them from my guildmates.

I auctioned a Superior Absorb for 80K the other day, then a Superior Air the day after for 62K, I think you're quotes are a little on the low side.

Threads that brag about how much someone else is a sucker inevitably lead to hurt feelings.

If you want to talk about trading, good/bad practices, go to Ventari's Sell.
If you want to stand around, brag, and be patted on the back, go elsewhere.
